In order to celebrate the first observation of Gravitational Waves and its revolutionary implications to the multi-messenger astronomy, the Interuniversity Institute for High Energies IIHE(ULB-VUB) is hosting a seminar in English for the general public “The Discovery of Gravitational Waves: The Sound of Black Holes” on Tuesday March 8th at 6.30 pm at VUB campus (Etterbeek).
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) collaboration has announced two weeks ago the first direct observation of gravitational waves, predicted in 1916 by Albert Einstein. Observed on September 14, 2015, this first event has been emitted by the merging of two black holes. Dr. Chad Finley, from the IceCube neutrino telescope experiment, will tell us more about this discovery and the consequences for the future of science in the multi-messenger era. The talk will be followed by a reception and a poster session on ULB-VUB related research.
