SUMMARY:Sciences & Cocktails #15: New ways to eradicate cancer
DESCRIPTION:PORTES: 19H30 / TALK: 20H30 / CONCERT: GLÜ\n\nRegistration fo
r this event is now open!\n\nHow do tumors grow? What makes cancer spread
through the body? What effective ways do we have to battle cancer? And how
can our own immune system help to slow down tumor growth?\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nF
or decades\, scientists have developed cancer therapies that target rapidl
y dividing cancer cells. Although\, in many cases\, more than 50% of the c
ells residing in tumors are not cancer cells\, but cells of our immune sys
tem\, which are supposed to protect us from diseases. However\, many of th
ese immune cells are cooperating with the cancer cells to enhance tumor gr
owth. What are these immune cells doing exactly? Which immune cells are ou
r allies or our enemies and can we manipulate them to boost their anti-tum
or functions by so-called immunotherapies?\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nThe young and upc
oming science talent Damya Laoui is exploring the role of the immune syste
m in tumor progression and is developing new personalized immunotherapies
based on dendritic cells. This work got her the Dunia Award (African Award
 s) and the MIT Innovator under 35 Europe Award 2017. She was nominated for
the Woman in Technology and Science award and is encouraging young women
to start studies and pursue careers in STEM. Tonight she will tell us all
about her innovative new techniques to win the battle against cancer.\n\n&
 nbsp\;\n\nAfterwards\, we'll get our doses of dry-ice chilled\, homemade c
ocktails at the bar together with a good shot of live music from Glü. Thi
s band from Brussels combines various electronic styles in an energetic li
ve blend with psychedelic visuals. Guaranteed to be a feast to the eyes an
 d ears!\n\n&nbsp\;\nDAMYA LAOUI\nDamya Laoui is professor in the `Cellular
and Molecular Immunology' group of the VUB and team leader `Tumor Immunol
ogy' at the VIB (Flanders Interuniversity Institute for Biotechnology). Sh
e was named European Innovator under 35 by MIT in 2017 for developing new
immunotherapies based on dendritic cells to win the battle against cancer.
In 2018 she received the New Scientist Science Talent Prize. Website\n
CONCERT\nGlü is a four-piece band based in Brussels. The band plays powe
rful and energetic live music\, blending its many influences from the elec
tronic music field and adding a psychedelic and cinematic touch\, as their
stage performances feature a live video artist.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nEntrance fe
e is 7 euros and includes a free cocktail (or any other drink from the bar
). Entry to the concert is free after the talk (~21:30). The event is held
in English.\n\nFind more informations about Science &amp\; Cocktails\n&#
